As a learning community centred in Christ, we walk hand in hand with God on our journey in faith.
Year 4 had some very special visitors, from our local Fire service. They told use all about what they do and how we can be safe, not only if there is a fire, but also road and water safety. We also had a go at holding some of their important equipment.
In our school we love reading. To grow our love of reading we: read everyday at story time as a class, currently we are reading Little Badman; every child has the opportunity to complete a page in our reading scrapbook; we complete a reading identity so we can see how we grow as a reader our the year; we also spend time each week reading any book we like from either the class library or our beautiful reading garden.
To celebrate the year of reading, we all took part in National Storytelling week. We did lots of fun activities building up to working in groups to write and then perform our own raps. Click below to watch some of our raps.
In DT we learnt how to follow a recipe to make health oat biscuits. Not only can we follow recipes, measure accurately we can also adapt and change a recipe to appeal to a target audience, keeping in mind a budget. Linking to article 24, we all love snacks, but we should keep in mind a healthy balanced diet and there are lots of alternatives to sugary snacks.
In English we used The BFG to support our learning and understanding of meeting tales. We focused on adding dialogue to our stories, without overloading them with speech. We then developed our writing by adding suspense to turn a meeting tale into a warning tale.
In Science we have learnt about animals and humans. We learnt about our digestion system by creating a practical model using things found in the house. We discussed the importance of taking care of our teeth and investigated what liquids have the biggest impact on our teeth using eggs. We also looked at food chains to understand how plants and animals, including us depend on one another.
To support our current and future science learning we visited Martineau Gardens where we developed our skills of identifying and classifying different plants and animals.
In Maths we are learning about mixed numbers and improper fractions, how to convert them and why fractions are important.
In geography we have been learning about Mediterranean Europe, including looking at the climate, agriculture and settlements. We used our geography skills to use atlas' to support our understanding.
In Art we studied the artist Jean-François Millet, by looking at his landscapes we learnt how to create the illusion of space. We then experimented with different techniques, which we then assessed and chose our best one to then use in our final piece.
In PE we have learnt about gymnastics. We learnt different types of jumps, landings and rolls.
In History we have been learning about the Anglo-Saxons and Vikings. How they lived and took control of England. We linked our English learning as we wrote a setting description of an Anglo-Saxon settlement and a news report about the Battle of Hastings 1066.
Recently, our school took part in the Rudolph Run, a fun event that raised over £1000 for Birmingham Hospice. This event shows how we can help others and is important to our school values. By helping Birmingham Hospice, we are showing kindness to everyone, which is something we believe in. Our work together shows that we care about helping others, which is a big part of what we learn in school.
In Computing we are looking at databases, how to sort and search them to find answers to questions. We also are creating our own database about animals to then interrogate We stared by creating a branch database, using similar rule to the game guess who as we will later use this skill in our science lessons.
